Are you experiencing tension in your body and mind?

Does your life move so fast that sometimes you forget to breathe?

Have you forgotten what it’s like to feel at peace with yourself?

Do you ever feel uprooted – blown around by life’s challenges?

Using gentle movement, TMW can bring you back to the centre of your life. You will experience yourself as someone who can release and rest, even in the middle of chaos. It is by returning to this more natural state of being that you can begin to change your relationship with yourself, others and the world. We will work with movement and breath, experiencing our bodies coming into balance and alignment, and learning from those experiences. When do you push yourself too far? When do you hold on too tight? What happens if you do less, if you listen to what your body is telling you?

The movement is based on simple, repetitive gestures, which engage the whole body in a flowing sequence. Different focuses are used during the sequence adding a powerful force for change. If you root yourself physically your whole system – mind, body emotions and spirit – responds and you feel more grounded. In a world facing huge change and uncertainty there is an even greater need for us to be flexible, balanced, centred and connected. Only then can we live our life and not just survive it.

TMW is an easy-to-learn sequence of movements, designed to improve physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. This course will give you a simple but powerful way to release tensions in your mind and body, and restore balance, confidence and relaxation. TMW has origins in Tai Chi and Chi Kung and is suitable for any age or level of mobility.

Tai Chi Movements for Wellbeing (TMW) FAQ

What is TMW?

Tai Chi Movements for Wellbeing is a sequence of movements specifically designed to promote physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.
Unlike traditional Tai Chi which can take up to a year to learn just one sequence, TMW is a distillation of Tai Chi and Chi Kung. It is a simplified sequence which, whilst drawing upon these disciplines, can be learnt over a course of 6 to 8 weeks.

Where did TMW originate?

The sequence was developed by Richard Farmer, an internationally renowned Tai Chi master who has been involved in Tai Chi for over 35 years. Richard Farmer co-developed the sequence with Dr David Quinn, former Head of Health Psychology at Hereford NHS.

How does TMW work?

The essence of TMW is healthy movement. It might be helpful to think of TMW as a moving meditation. Whilst for many of us, sitting and meditating for a period of time can be a struggle, meditating through movement can feel like less of a challenge and therefore more enjoyable.
TMW uses gestures to enable the body to influence the mind rather than trying to work on changing the mind first. In daily life, we may become tense, anxious or feel low. Our bodies often reflect these emotions in the form of discomfort such as shoulder pain, jaw tightness, shallow breathing and headaches.
Rather than starting with the mind and telling ourselves that we ‘shouldn’t’ feel this way, TMW begins with the body.
Through balanced, carefully devised and graceful, flowing movements, TMW uses breath work and physical gestures to begin to reflect back to the mind a more relaxed, positive and in control outlook on life. Focusing on the movements of the sequence can allow you to become more present and as you learn to do this, you can become more relaxed and in tune with yourself and the world around you.
Eventually the mind can begin to follow suit!

What happens during a session?

Each class builds upon the next, explaining sections of the sequence in short, manageable segments. You will learn not only the physical gestures but also the meanings behind them and the underlying principles which can bring about positive mental and physical change.
You will be supported to practise at home between classes with a DVD/MP4 download or a booklet if you prefer, which contains clear photographs of the movements

How long does a class last?

Each class is one hour long and the course is delivered over a period of six / eight weeks.

• improved attention and concentration
• increased relaxation
• improved posture
• improved balance
• increased flexibility
• increased circulation
• physical/mental/emotional well-being
• hand/eye co-ordination
• self-care and self-healing

Is TMW suitable for me?

TMW is a very gentle form of exercise which can be adapted for specific individual circumstances. It can be beneficial for those of all ages and can be practised either sitting, standing or as a combination of both.
If you’re in need of something to support you in life but short on time, the sequence can be practised in full in as little as ten minutes a day. Equally, even just thirty seconds to one minute of your favourite movement can be extremely beneficial!

TMW encourages you to explore areas of your life which need attention through the sequence. In this way, you can focus on strengthening areas of life through movement and breath in your own time to help you live life rather than simply survive it.

Adele is a teacher who has genuine passion and belief in what she is teaching and this makes her an inspiring and empowering presence in my life. She has taught me ways to bring peace and calm to my soul through her knowledge and commitment. She is gentle and caring and I feel very lucky to have found her. I wish it had been sooner!

I have had some exposure to Tai Chi and various martial arts (when I was younger!) so when you started to offer TMW as a warm down exercise after Nordic Walking, that re-kindled my interest certainly. I was pleased that you decided to offer TMW as a separate lesson so signed up – of course lockdown stimulated video sessions which I find to be most convenient. These sessions are extremely clear to follow and are well constructed – there are ample opportunities for 2 way feedback and breakout rooms enable uninhibited comment!
Its a complicated subject and there is a lot to learn but Adele is well versed in Tai Chi philosophy and joyful personality inspires confidence, and that over time a fuller and more comprehensive enlightenment is possible.

Mr MC

TMW has helped me develop into a more calm, self-accepting person, enjoying the gentle graceful movements that flow and release tensions and problems in all areas of my life. It frees my mind from overthinking by focusing on where I am in the present moment – allowing me to be more in-tune and self-accepting in body, mind, emotion, spirit.
